A zonally averaged model, including photochemistry, is devised to study the effects of transport by mean meridional motions and eddy diffusion upon the ozone concentration. The model contains twenty-two levels in the vertical from the ground to 66 km and eighteen grid points, from pole to pole, in the horizontal. In this paper, we limit ourselves to investigations of effects of mean meridional motions. Numerical integrations are carried out for a period of two years. Results show that the model reproduces the annual period of the atmosphere. While mean meridional motions do transport ozone away from tropical regions, they are not sufficient to account for the observed buildup of ozone in high latitudes.
